A different world.

It is amazing how different a place can be, just 20 meters from where you are. Our hotel, The Delfini Pension, had a barbeque last night. An all-in deal for a set price. This isn't the type of thing we would normally go to but thought it might make a nice change. Fortunately, our plans to join in were scuppered by three things:

  • We didn't notice you had to book a table by mid-day yesterday

  • It started at 8 o'clock and we're never ready that early

  • The night included a quiz...

If nothing else, the last point kept us well away. I don't mind quizzes, but not here. We come to Greece for a change of scenery and people. Not to do the exact same things we could do at home.
So, with the barbeque off the agenda what were we to do? We needed to cash some travellers cheques so why not check out the menu for the hotel next door on the way? This hotel, to the left as you look out to sea, has a grass garden which Jane tought would be nice to eat in. Unfortunately the menu was very limited and we decided it wasn't for us.
Our second option was the hotel on the other side of ours. This was a very good choice.
The menu for The Avra Taverna (warning: Greek script required) wasn't greatly different to that of any other restaurant in Nidri but the experience was completely different.
We took a table on the beach, near the water's edge, and were served by a young woman who appeared to be genuinely please to meet us. She must have been impressed with my accent because she assumed we were Greek. I had to tell her we were English because she was talking to us, full flow, and I couldn't understand a word.
When we arrived two other English couples were eating. By the time our meal had arrived we were the only Brits in the restaurant. That's more like it... As I've said before, a high level of natives is always a good sign of good food.
The meal was very nice too. I had chicken in a special sauce and Jane had... a tuna salad. We shared some saganaki, creamed mushrooms and courgette balls. The courgette balls turned out to be croquette courgettes. Different and very nice.
I think we will be spending our last two nights there.
